09 Nov 2005 coolant expansion tank
Here are a couple of photos that show some things I’ll have to figure out about mounting the coolant tank.
The coolant expansion tank is a Moroso racing tank, and costs about 99 USD from places like Jeg’s. It’s very well made, and has three mounting tabs. It came included with the engine, and was all plumbed up, and even came with the cool stickers. Nothing to do but find a spot and bolt it on.
The best location for the tank is about a foot above the engine. Of course, this kind of gets in the way of your visibility, not to mention the additional drag. So, we need to find a place under the cowl that is as high as possible, so any air in the system will hopefully migrate up to this tank.
The best place under the cowl is right at the top center, but the intercooler will be here. So, the last remaining location is to the right of the intercooler on the firewall. To get the tank as high as possible, it looks like I’ll need to move the tank out a bit so that I can get the cap off. Here you can see how the cap will be difficult to remove with the mounting flanges for the camlocs. The camloc hold the cowl on, or rather, they will when I finally install them.
Here you can see if I move the tank out about 1.5 inches then the cannister can be high, and I can still remove the cap.
(I know it looks like magic, but my hand is underneath holding the tank up in these two photos.)
Update: I’ve decided to design a new coolant tank. I’ve got something drawn, and I’ll build a mockup out of paper tomorrow to see how it looks.
