21 Aug 2005 Different types of “Molex” pins
While trying to get my strobes hooked up I discovered that there are at least two different types of “Molex” pins. I needed to replace some on one of the wires connecting the rear strobe, and when I tried to put the pins onto the molex connector, the pins would not go in. Bummer.
Here is a photo showing the two different types. The one on the left is the one that came with the strobe, and the one on the right is the one I bought from Steinair, IIRC.
It’s hard to see, but the main difference is that the pin on the left has the same diameter all the way down the shank. The one on the left has a little step to a larger diameter where the locking tabs come out. Also, the pin on the left only has one locking tab.
I bought my strobes at “Strobes ‘n More”, and they sell a kit for 1.99 with a plastic connector and three pins. You can choose male or female. They claim it is a “standard AMP connector”. Looks like that’s a good place to start.
