Eggenfellner Subaru 2.5XT regular maintenance

12 Mar 2005 Eggenfellner Subaru 2.5XT regular maintenance

Update: 20210918 I ended up removing the Eggenfellner Subaru engine and replacing it with a Lycoming. Any post that references the Eggenfellner or the Subaru should be there only as an example of what not to do. Listen to the designer, and install the engine that that designer recommends – which for the RV-8 is a Lycoming IO-360.

Here is what needs to be done to the engine on a regular basis:
Change engine oil and filter every 25 hours
The PSRU (propellor speed reduction unit) oil should be changed every 200 hours. Do this by draining the oil, then filling with 1 liter of 10W30 automotive oil. Idle engine for a few minutes and drain. Repeat this one more time and then fill with 20 ounces (0.6 liter) of Valvoline Synthetic 85W140 gear oil.
Replace the fuel pump inlet filters after taxi testing, then again after first and second tank full and thereafter during the annual inspection. Clean or replace the high pressure filter every annual.
Replace the cam belt, alternator belt, supercharger belt, and spark plugs every 250 hours or second annual inspection.
Re-torque all fasteners on reduction drive and engine accessories every annual inspection.
Recommendations:
Fuel filter: F54618 by Purolator
Fuel pre-filters: PUROLATOR # F20011M
Oil Filter: PPL-14459 Proline or K&N oil filter HP-1004.
PSRU Oil: 600cc (20 oz) Valvoline Synthetic 85W140 gear oil.
Q: My PSRU, like yours, too, came with oil in it and I don’t want to drain it just to see if there is 20 oz. in there. My sight gauge shows about half full.

A: Drain and refill after all ground testing is done.

Total ground testing will be about 5 hours when all tests are complete. Then drain the reduction drive fluid while warm, add one qt of 10w30 synthetic car oil and ldle for 5 minutes to flush drive. Drain this while warm and fill with 20oz of full synthetic 85W140 gear oil.

Your half indication is close enough for ground ops.
