Engine hanging – round 2

09 Apr 2005 Engine hanging – round 2

OK, so we started the day with thinking that the 120 CHF drill bit was going to be the solution to our problems. It did solve the problem of the lower right engine mounting hole. Unfortunately, not either of the upper two holes.

The problem is very subtle. The hole is perpendicular to the firewall, which is good. The problem is that perpendicular to the firewall eventually hits one of the engine mount braces. This means you can’t get a drill in there. Creativity is required again. Emmett comes through again.

Here you can see a major league bit of tool creation in action. It worked.

Here is a detailed photo that I made up from two pictures of the stuff.

Starting from the left, we have the 3/8″ drill bit which has had six sides grinded onto the end, a socket that fits the resulting hex, a very long 1/4″ extension, an adapter from the 1/4″ socket to the small hex that screwdriver bits use, and an electric drill with one of these screwdriver bit holders in the chuck.

The result is a nicely mounted engine…

And a proud builder…

and another one!

Now I’ve got to get all those wires that are hanging over the side installed.
